此首《By the Time I Get to Phoenix》首由Johnny Rivers唱，收在1966的《Changes》中，未受特注。1967，歌手Glen Campbell重新，然在告示牌村曲排行榜只拿下第2名，在同年他得年度「最佳男歌手」及「最佳代 (contemporary) 男歌手」座葛美。
作此曲的Jimmy Webb，感自於和女友Susan Horton的分手，Horton之後嫁了Linda Ronstadt的表弟Bobby，但人一直是朋友。歌曲述的是男人多次要女友，但均未行，一次於下定心走了，女友次是真的之後，恐是心吧！知名男歌手/影星「瘦皮猴」法克辛屈 ( Frank Sinatra )此曲「有史以得最棒的感情歌 (the greatest torch song ever written)」，之後自己也有翻唱。
