1968年，美黑人人袖丁路德金恩及美勃甘迪相遭到暗 ( 刺 ) ，也因此引美The Rascals ( 之前大家熟知的名The Young Rascals) 的Felix Cavaliere和Eddie Brigati出此首《People Got to Be Free》。

由於歌曲含有政治性的背景，唱片公司一度，怕影到The Rascals的事。此曲作者兼主唱Felix Cavaliere的取服，唱片公司才於同意行。好在歌曲然取高昂的曲，但求的是容和自由，也未抨到任何政治派及人。此曲於1968推出後，在告示牌排行榜了5的冠，唱片售也超了4百。

即使大都接受首歌，但The Rascals仍非常慎，了防止生意外情，只在有多非裔美人的才演唱此曲。若否，取消此曲目。
